Harry the Baby Sasquatch

And the Magic Crystal

Harry, the baby sasquatch lived with his mother and father in the deep, dark woods and loved to play with his baby animal friends. On sunny days, his mom would send him out to gather nuts to put away for winter. Sometimes she would go with him to pick wild berries for his favorite dessert.

One day, Harry was gathering up nuts in an old cloth he found hanging from a barbed-wire fence when he spotted a sparkly rock buried in the dirt. This particular sparkly rock would have been difficult to miss for each time it caught a sunbeam darts of colored fire bounced off everything around it.

“Wow!” Harry exclaimed. “That’s pretty!” He plopped the cloth filled with nuts on the ground beside it. “I’ll dig it up and take it to mom.”

Harry didn’t know that he had found the Forest Wizard’s magic crystal. But it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. From the minute he saw the sparkly rock, he knew he had to have it for his mom.

Harry got down on his knees and began to dig. He played in the dirt so much that his fingernails were really strong and, in no time at all, he pulled the sparkly rock free and held it up. A sunbeam flashed off one side, hit Harry in the face and he yelped in delight. He grabbed the cloth full of nuts in one hand and the sparkly rock in the other.

“It’s even prettier out of the ground!” he yelled when he jumped up and headed for home.

But magic crystals don’t just go home with anybody and this one had a mind of its own. It had flown out of the wizard’s house to explore the forest and got stuck when it landed. It wanted the wizard to find it and take it home but the baby sasquatch held it so tight it couldn’t get away. There was only one thing the magic crystal could do and that was call for help.

“Yeeeeeeee!” it called.

The baby sasquatch heard the sound but didn’t know the magic crystal was calling the wizard. He was running home as fast as he could but stopped when a loud voice boomed through the trees.

“Where do you think you’re going?” it said.

Harry looked all around. When he didn’t see anyone, he started running again.

“I said, where do you think you’re going?” the voice repeated.

Harry stopped. “Who’s there?” he asked. “Who’s talking to me?”

“The Forest Wizard,” said the voice. “Where do you think you’re going with my magic crystal?”

“This isn’t your magic crystal,” Harry told him. “I found this sparkly rock buried in the ground. I dug it up and it’s mine!”

“That sparkly rock is my magic crystal and I can prove it,” said the invisible wizard.

“No you can’t!” Harry told him. “I found it and it belongs to me!”

“Magic Crystal, Magic Crystal use your powers and come to me,” the wizard said.

The magic crystal started to get hot. It got hotter and hotter until it turned bright red and burned Harry’s hand. Harry dropped it on the ground and cried, “Ouch, ouch, ouch. That sparkly rock burned me!”

“I told you I could prove it was mine,” the wizard told him. He walked out from behind a tree and picked up the magic crystal that had cooled down.

“You’re not a wizard!” Harry said in disgust. “You’re a chipmunk!”

“I’m not a chipmunk,” the wizard told him. “I just look like one sometimes.”

“I wanted to give that pretty rock to my mom,” Harry whimpered. “Now all I have to give her is this bunch of nuts.”

“Didn’t you see the sign I posted? There’s a reward for anyone who finds my magic crystal,” the wizard told him. “You have more than a bunch of nuts to give your mom.” The wizard pointed at the cloth containing the nuts and disappeared.

Harry opened the cloth and his eyes widened. Every nut had turned into a glowing white ball and they were all strung together like a garland on a tree.

“Oh, my,” Harry cried. “I don’t know what these are but they’re really pretty. My mom will like these a lot better than a sparkly rock.”

And that’s how Harry’s mom became the only sasquatch in the forest with a pearl necklace.
